EVB
EVB (formerly Evaluation Bureau) is a kick-ass design firm specializing in work for “broadcast and broadband.” One thing that you notice with their work is that it looks like it all could have been done with Flash. I know they emphasize Flash skills in their job listings, and their web projects certain make terrific use of Flash, but I am more curious as to if (and how) they use it for their broadcast work. Most typical broadcast design is done with expensive high end systems or software like Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects. Flash really hasn’t been used a lot for broadcast graphics — although it certainly is gaining popularity for certain types of animation and motion graphics for broadcast, and rightfully so.
The vector-based nature of Flash makes it possible to scale graphics up from web resolution to television, HDTV and film resolutions without loss of quality (until you start importing video or raster graphics into Flash, that is). With the last few versions of Flash, it has become easier to output files for use in broadcast (QuickTime, AVI, etc.). Still, it isn’t perfect. Flash works in square pixels and does not have tools built in to view work on an NTSC monitor as you’re working on it, to check for broadcast-legal colors and luminances, or to do drop-frame video to sync sound with longer projects.
With the continuously blurring line between broadband and broadcast content, motion graphics designers will be begin to work more and more in both mediums. EVB is just ahead of the curve.
