Aesthetic Apparatus
I drove down to Minneapolis yesterday and caught the Aesthetic Apparatus design lecture at MCAD. Mike and Dan put on a pretty good show, and their work is incredibly cool.
They both got their start at Planet Propaganda in Madison, and formed AA in June 2002 in Minneapolis specializing in hand-screen-printed posters for indie rock bands and such — of course, they’ll tell you they do other design work to, like identities, CD/DVD packaging, book covers, and brochures, but their famous for their posters.
The lecture was a lot of fun. You could tell that they work well together. They showed and talked about a lot of their work, and about their design and printing techniques.
It all made me want to take on a more physical design project. I love designing for TV and Web, but there is just something about being able to pick up your design and feel the weight of the layers of ink, or the texture of the paper — not to mention the assortment of smells that come along with the process.
After checking out AA’s site, definitely swing by GigPosters.com for some more rock poster action.
