In Select “Citites”

I noticed a typo today in a banner ad (archive of original ad) for Fox Searchlight’s upcoming film The Good Thief on the NYTimes.com site. As a designer, I know that it easy for simple errors to slip by in the blur of production, but try to keep them to a minimum by having my work proofed a number of times before final output. This example surprised me because it took me a second to see the error — the phrase the word is used in is common enough that most people would breeze right through it, comprehending the statement, but not necessarily “reading” each word. It also surprised me to see it in an ad from a big studio and placed on the New York Times site — I’m not sure why I hold them up to a higher standard, but I do.

Of course, in my naïvety, I believe that people actually read banner ads. Sad.
