DaringFireball punctuation rant

John over at DaringFireball goes off on Cory Doctorow a little about Cory’s anti-curly-quote stance. As a curly-quote pusher, I feel a little guilty for not using them more often on FargoBoy — although I won’t let “double-hypen” em-dashes slide. In my up-coming FargoBoy re-design (based on MT 2.61), I’ll implement a couple of MT Plug-ins that should remedy this issue, including John’s SmartyPants.

As for John’s opinion of Robin Williams as a saint, I tend to agree with him. For me, her Beyond the Mac Is Not A Typewriter book is like a typographer’s bible. It should be required reading for any designer working with type (web, print, motion, etc.). Maybe it is just because I have an apostrophe in my name, but go a little nuts when I see blatant apostrophe abuse — especially in logos; there’s nothing like putting a sample of typographic incompetence on every piece of business communications you send out. Sigh.
