North Dakota: Nuclear Superpower
Onion headline: North Dakota Found To Be Harboring Nuclear Missiles. This is hilarious. And, at least somewhat, accurate. Scary.
This is clearly an excessive number of weapons for a place like North Dakota to possess. In this post-Cold War environment, we should be moving away from nuclear proliferation among developing states … The South Dakotans, while a simple people themselves, are friendly, hospitable, and far more in touch with the outside world. Many people, myself included, have passed through and seen the Badlands and Mount Rushmore. North Dakota, on the other hand, is a bleak, racially homogeneous state that few people ever enter or exit.”

Great article. Being from North Dakota, I can totally relate. What I don’t understand is…why is this article in The Onion and not in something like The New York Times?

I’m sorry, but hacking on people from North Dakota is hardly the way about doing anything besides being crude and intolerable. I’m from ND and find the state to be very isolated, but lovely. I can’t belive having missiles in North Dakota is hardly all the fault of North Dakota. What happens when the US government plants missiles in ND and people around the world see ND as an independant state?? We are still under the government of America. So, if calling people from ND unrenounced to the rest of the world, you are wrong. We live with and around poverty every day. We aren’t as rich as the rest of America, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. You capitalistic left-wing bastards can piss off some more people around the world if you want, but ND is here to stay and so are the missiles. So quit your bitching already, don’t you know when to just shut up and live “your” life?? North Dakotans are hardly the people to just “pull the trigger” and blow up any American city. Instead of bashing people from ND, try and bash the people that put in your head that we are crazy and stupid, because they’re the one’s that are wrong.

Dan, perhaps you are not familiar with The Onion (a satirical newspaper), or perhaps you are just a little too sensitive.
As somebody who lives in and appreciates the great state of North Dakota, I can empathize. We are often considered second-rate citizens in this great nation; our simple, hard-working ethics mocked by those who don’t understand, or unknowingly jealous.
As to our state’s proliferation of nuclear weapons…it is partly due to our remoteness and rank as a second-rate citizenry that the U.S. chooses to place its arsenal (an obvious enemy target) amidst us, and partly due to the fact that we’re farthest away from a coastal attack. Poor Nevada gets to be the testing area though.

LOL! I just read that article. I loved it. I am from North Dakota and I found it quite funny. This is the part I loved best though:
“racially homogeneous state”
That is so true and as long as it stays that way, our state will continue to rule.

I too am from ND.Lived here on and off all my
life.I guess I don’t have much objection to us
having missles in our back yard, but I do have objections to the people that put them there have been keeping it a secret from us.? For how long?Have they ever had problems with these missles?Where did they come from? Do we have a nuclear reactor under my childs playhouse? Will radiation ever leak through the ground at our kids schools?
These are just some of the questions I would like to ask our “trustworthy government”. I think something that jeopardises the future of me or
my family we should have the right to be informed
of. Dont get me wrong, Me of all people would hate the thought of being taken over by another
country or loosing the little freedom we have
left. I just dont like being deceived and made to beleive things from the very people “we” put in charge of keeping us safe. Please define the word
“SAFE”. I would like to think we are safe, but
the way this government operates, “are we”? I
mean really, that is the kind of thing you don’t find out about till it a little bit too late, and
then its like,”were sorry” we vaporized your children, and that your dog has two tails and one eye, maybey we should have warned you about the possible side effects of living next door to an
“abandoned” missle site.If we are so worried about terrorism mabey we should quit letting terrorists into “OUR” UNITED STATES before it is too late.Maybey if they would quit manufactureing
up problems to make their budgets bigger, and put some of that budget money into something worth while we could all rest a little easier. Thank You.

Im not going to walk over one of these and blow my leg off… this is not Iraq or Vietnam. Also We are not “starving” as the artical said.
